2013 MLB Uniform Changes

Ahhhhhhhhhhh finally, the first regular season game of the 2013 Major League Baseball slate is now just two days away. It has been 152 days since the Giants won the 2012 World Series and a lot of things have happened. Of those happenings, many of them included player and coaching transactions. However, my favorite thing to do in the offseason is seeing what teams do with their uniforms. Each year it is assured that at least a few of the teams will make tweeks to or add new uniforms to their collection. Last year the most notable uniform changes included the Blue Jays and Orioles.

This year there is no lack of uniform tweeks and changes so lets begin to go over them, beginning with those effecting the entire MLB.

(There are links provided indicated with a *)

ALL TEAMS
  • On Opening day each team will wear a patch for the victims* of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. Originally only the Redsox and the Yankees intended on wearing the patch, however Commissioner Bud Selig convinced the rest 28 teams to wear it as well.
  • On April 15, as is has become a tradition, all teams will wear Jackie Robinson's number 42. There will only be 18 teams on playing on April 15 this year so the remain 12 will wear the honorary number 42 the next game they play.
  • On Memorial Day each team will wear camouflage hats* with their team logo embroiled on them.
  • Each team will wear a "stars and stripes" hat on the Fourth of July. (The Blue Jays will wear a special hat in honor of Canada Day.)
  • The feel of those NIKE combat football gloves are making there way to the batting gloves* in baseball. For those that are not similar with them, each pair of gloves are designed to show a completed logo or team name by placing your hands next to each other.
  • All players are going to be required to wear the S100 Pro Comp batting helmet*, the latest one for anti-concussions. The only players that will not be required to wear the helmet are those that wear the double ear flapped helmet.
Athletics

No changes for the overall uniform look for the A's, however they will be doing a series this year called "Throwback Thursday."*

Astros

The Astros have done a complete uniform and rebranding of the franchise*, which is a symbol of there transformation into the American League.

Braves

Instead of wearing their customary gray pants*, as they have normally done, with their navy uniforms, the Braves have designed special grey pants for the navy uniforms*.

Brewers

The Brewers have added an alternate gold uniform*. They also held a uniform creation competition for the fans and the winning design would be worn on March 22*. It would not surprise me at all if this became another alternate uniform for the team. Also, expect the team to do something Polish Heritage Day.

Cardinals

The Cardinals unvield a beautiful new alternate uniform* that will have St. Louis scripted on the front of the jersey.  They also have made several small uniform changes including a larger, more enhanced bird that sits on the bat*. They will also wear a number 6 patch* in honor of the late Stan Musial. Also, in an odd move, the Cardinals held a fan vote in order to decided between a blue hat or a red hat for their away uniform.

Giants

The Giants will wear special gold lettered uniforms* the day that the team will receive their championship rings.

Mets

The Mets have made several uniform changes. The largest of them is that they have added two blue alternate uniforms*, one for home and one for away. They have also included a new orange brimmed hat*. On their uniforms will also be a patch for the All-Star game* that they will be hosting.

Nationals

The Nationals have added a new blue brimmed hat* that they will sport with their red alternate home uniforms.

Orioles

This year was not as busy as last year when it comes to uniform changes, however they will wear a patch with the number 4* on it in honor of Earl Weaver, the most successful Oriole manager, who passed away this offseason.

Pirates

The Pirates have introduced a throwback 1971 uniform done right*. These uniforms will feature the elastic waistband and they will be slip-ons; both common for that time.

Reds

The Reds have changed their shade of red from pastone 199 to pastone 200* and have also added both a Spanish heritage uniform* and a Navy background logo.*

Rockies

The Rockies will sport a patch in honor of their 20th anniversary.*

Twins

The Twins will wear 1948 St. Paul Saints uniforms* on May 30.

White Sox

The White Sox will wear 1983 throwbacks* on each Sunday game during the 2013 season.

Well there is is, all the uniform changes and tweeks for the 2013 Major League Baseball season. I cannot wait till the season begins Sunday night.

Have fun this season!
